The program has been extended into Grade 10 with curriculum for English classes. This 30-lesson unit focuses on the issues of violence, bullying, sexuality, and substance use, and also takes a look at gangs. These are all issues identified by adolescents as problems they are facing and fit the triad of violence, sexual behaviour, and substance use that are central focus of the Fourth R Core Program. Since the stories are about issues important to adolescents, each of the six short stories provide a starting point for reading, thinking, talking, and writing about these important topics for teens.
A Catholic Perspective of this program is available, which is consistent with Catholic beliefs.
Similar teaching strategies are used as in the Core Program, and expands students’ understanding of effective communication, problem-solving, and decision-making. Students are asked to share their ideas in small groups, larger groups, and whole-class discussions. Some exercises are designed to be done individually, while others involve collaboration with classmates. |
