New Dating Seminars Target Teen Violence
Story on the National Public Radio (online and on-air)
School officials are worried that too many teens are hitting and slapping the person they're dating. To target this dating abuse, violence prevention classes are springing up in schools around the country.
This fall, middle and high schools in Wichita, Kan.; Providence, R.I.; Boise, Idaho; the Bronx in New York; Boston; and six other cities have lined up programs based on a curriculum that has proven effective in Ontario.

A School-Based Program to Prevent Adolescent Dating Violence: A Cluster Randomized Trial.
The results from a recent cluster randomized trial which focused on the Fourth R school-based program designed to prevent adolescent dating violence was just released in the August issue of the Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Dr. David Wolfe was the lead researcher, supported by numerous outstanding colleagues in the field including Claire Crooks, PhD., Peter Jaffe, PhD., Debbie Chiodo, MA., Ray Hughes, MEd., Wendy Ellis, PhD., Larry Stitt, MSc., and Allan Donner, PhD.
The objective of the RCT was to determine whether an interactive curriculum that integrates dating violence prevention with lessons on healthy relationships, sexual health, and substance use reduces physical dating violence. A total of 1722 students between the ages of 14-15 from 20 public schools were surveyed (52.8% female). The results show that teaching youth about health relationships as part of their required heath curriculum reduced physical dating violence and increased condom use 2.5 years later at a low per-student cost.
