SCHOOL-BASED PROJECTS

Video Diversity Program

UNITING OUR NATIONS VIDEO PROJECT

In 2005 and 2006, approximately 40 First Nations students from three schools in the Thames Valley District School Board were involved in developing video resources. With the assistance of facilitators Mr. Darren Thomas (Six Nations of the Grand River Territory near Brantford, Ontario) and Ms. Toni Wilson (Medway High School), these youth identified issues that result in conflicts (e.g., substance use, teen pregnancy, racism, poverty), developed scenarios to highlight effective ways to resolve these conflicts, and made a video depicting a range of communication and problem-solving skills. A help-seeking video was also developed to depict students approaching different adults to ask for assistance for themselves or a friend when facing difficult situations. These videos will be used by Fourth R teachers across the country as an additional resource for the program.
