BINGE DRINKING BLOWOUT: THE EXTREME DANGERS OF ALCOHOL ABUSE
(27 minutes)

The following descriptions are for the videos used to supplement Grade9-10 Physical and Health Education.

A no-use" message documentary focusing on how excessive drinking affects young adults. Students share experiences of blackouts, violence, date rape encounters, and alcohol poisoning emergencies, while friends and families of victims tell students about the heavy price they paid. Binge Drinking Blowout teaches that mixing drugs with alcohol is lethal and that "partying" has serious consequences not to be ignored.

This video is used in Unit 3 Lesson 6 and 7. Watching the video and completing a questionnaire with the students facilitates discussion which helps students make the connection between drinking alcohol and participating in high-risk behaviours. The discussion emphasizes the non-physical effects of drinking alcohol, including the lack of reasoning, loss of inhibition and poor decision-making that occurs as a result of binge drinking.

THE TRUTH ABOUT DRUGS: THE TEEN FILES SERIES (30 minutes)

This is a powerful program that graphically demonstrates the direct physical effects and dangers of drug use, but also deals with the indirect dangers, such as possibly spending time in jail, the possibility of being assaulted or raped, becoming homeless, injury or accidental death or even suicide -- or simply the inability to focus and study. The program provides real-world support to Health and Life Skills units on alcohol and drug education, substance abuse, behavioural choices and decision making, personal health, and family life issues.

This video is used in Unit 3 Lesson 2. After watching the video, students discuss various issues and topics focusing on the effects of substance use/abuse. Students explore how drug use affects many people, not just the user. In addition, students examine the negative consequences of drug use, and discuss prevention methods to ensure that what happened to the people in the video does not happen to them.

SMOKING: TRUTH OR DARE? THE TEEN FILES SERIES (29 minutes)

Despite increased education in the classroom about the very real dangers of tobacco use, many teens still are not getting the message. They may be aware that smoking or chewing tobacco has dire consequences, but they do not believe or care that they, too, will become part of the statistics. This program graphically demonstrates to teens that use tobacco exactly what this deadly habit is doing to them. The damage to their bodies is not just something intangible that they might have to face 40 years down the road. These young people are suffering the deadly effects of their tobacco use right now, and the consequences will only get worse. 

This video is used in Unit 3 Lesson 3. Through the use of the video, students will make connections between tobacco use (smoking and chewing tobacco) and the physical, social and emotional effects. Students will identify why it is so difficult for teens to make lifestyle choices that protect their health.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SEX; THE TEEN FILES SERIES (30 minutes)

See the harsh realities of having sex too young ... including unwanted pregnancies and STI's . Join a group of sexually active teenagers, most of whom are having unprotected sex. See their reactions as they tour a microbiology lab where hundreds of STI's are diagnosed each year. Witness their meeting with Lisa, a young heterosexual woman with full-blown AIDS. Watch them participate in a "mock" AIDS test - with a sombre, unexpected ending. Hear teens discuss the struggles of being parents at a young age. Hard-hitting and real.

This video is used in Unit 2 Lesson 3. This program forces teens to face the hard- hitting realities of having sex too young, including unplanned pregnancies and STI's. Students discuss responsible sexuality, and the decisions and factors influencing responsible sexuality.

SKILLS FOR EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS - DEVELOPED BY FOURTH R (97 minutes)

his video was created by high school students and is divided into 3 parts. The first part of the video demonstrates assertive, passive and aggressive responses. The second part of the video demonstrates refusal, delay and negotiation skills. The third part of the video demonstrates a combination of refusal, delay and negotiation skills.

This video is used in all three units- Unit 1 Lesson 6, Unit 2 Lesson 5, and Unit 3 Lesson5. Teachers can use the video to demonstrate model role plays and/or it can be used to assist with the teaching of healthy relationship skills.
